The GameJam Survival Guide
So many of the questions I get are about how to learn game development, or how to stick to and finish a project.
For all of these I have said the same answer over and over:
"join a game jam".
That's why this book exists, so I can just point them here instead of ranting on stream for an hour every time. The GameJam Survival Guide is a short and sweet guidebook for those people.
The GameJam Survival Guide is broken up into three parts:
Pre-Jam talks about why joining a game jam at least once in your life is worth your time and energy. Then goes into how you might best choose a jam to participate in, building a team if you're not going solo, and then some tools and resources for devs.
Jam Time covers things to consider when you're in the middle of a jam. It goes over coming up with ideas, staying focused and motivated by paying attention to your health, being effective in a team, general problem solving, and other project management topics like scope, deadlines, and project management tools. Then finally submitting and sharing your game.
Post-Jam is all about reflection. It goes over how to seek and use feedback in useful ways, as well as some guidelines to follow for specific obstacles devs often find themselves facing during jams.
